  • Which hospitals should be taking part in this study?
    • All acute hospitals in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and public hospitals in Jersey that receive and treat patients with Crohn’s disease.
  • What is the study period for this study?
    • The data collection spreadsheet is designed to identify patients aged 16 and older, who were admitted between 1st September 2019 – 29th February 2020 and 1st September – 28th February 2021 inclusive. These two 6-month study periods are designed to capture a snapshot of the service prior to, and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • I can’t fill complete all the fields on the case identification spreadsheet – will it still be accepted?
    • The data collection spreadsheet also highlights some columns that are ‘KEY FIELDS.’ These are the columns that NCEPOD needs to be populated to proceed with our selection process. If you or your colleagues are experiencing any issues with populating the Key fields, please contact the NCEPOD team ASAP.
  • How can we identify patients for this study?
    • All patients aged over 16 years old, who were admitted to hospital with an ICD10 diagnosis of Crohn’s disease, and who underwent an abdominal surgical procedure using OPCS codes. More information about the relevant ICD10 and OPCS codes can be found in the data collection spreadsheet on sheet 4.

  • My informatics team has only identified a very small number of patients
    • Our scoping exercise for this study showed that some Trusts/ Health boards were identifying a very low number of patients within the stated timeframe and parameters. Extrapolating from the data we have, there should be enough patients to proceed with selection and data collection. However, please note that we may need to get back in touch to request additional data from a further 6-month period. If this becomes necessary, we will let you know as soon as possible.
  • What will happen once we have submitted our data collection spreadsheet?
    • NCEPOD will import the information you have sent into our study database; we will then randomly select several patients per hospital to be looked at in more detail. For each of these selected patients we will upload a clinician questionnaire to our online system and ask the Local Reporter to invite the clinician who was involved in the patients care to complete this. We will also request for case notes relating to the patient’s admission to be sent to us for peer-review.
