Peri-Operative Care Study: Frequently Asked Questions

Data Collection for study March 2010 to March 2011
Publication date: 9th December 2011
Are patients receiving anaesthesia for electro-convulsive therapy or cardioversions included?
If these are surgical inpatients with a planned overnight stay, and if they meet the rest of our inclusion/exclusion criteria, we are including them in the study.
Are patients included if they only have a local or regional anaesthetic, or nerve block?
If these are surgical inpatients with a planned overnight stay, and if they meet the rest of our inclusion/exclusion criteria, we are including them in the study.
Should locum anaesthetists complete the clinical forms?
Yes.
Are patients that go to a step-down area on a trolley included and 23 hour unit included?
We are including all inpatients who have a planned overnight stay (even if they went to a 23 hour unit, or stayed overnight for social/timing reasons, or are cases that go to a step-down area on a trolley).
How do you define day cases?
If the patients do not have a planned overnight stay, they are considered to be day cases. If the patient is admitted, with the operation having been delayed for a few days, then has the operation, and goes home immediately thereafter, we are considering that to be a day case. The inpatient stay needs to occur after surgery.
Is cardiothoracic surgery excluded from this study?
Cardiac surgery is excluded from this study, however thoracic surgery is included.
What time does the study period start and end?
Please include all patients whose anaesthetic commences just after midnight, going into the 1st and those whose anaesthetic commences by 23:59 on the March, 7th (and all those inbetween).
On the clinical questionnaire, question 13a, what measurement should we report creatinine in?
mmol/L
Does my hospital need to participate?
All hospitals who conduct inpatient surgery on patients aged 16 or over, will be asked to participate.
I would like to read the protocol - could you send me a copy?
