Peri-Operative Care Study
Data Collection for study March 2010 to March 2011
Publication date: November/December 2011
NCEPOD is examining remediable factors in the peri-operative care of patients aged 16 or over, who undergo inpatient surgery (both elective and emergency). This national, prospective study will be held from 1-7 March inclusive 2010.

We will be asking anaesthetists to complete a 1-page form for all patients they anaesthetise in the chosen week. There may be multiple forms per patient i.e. if the patient has surgery more than once in the study week. Day cases, obstetrics, and cardiac, transplant and neurosurgical patients, will be excluded. We are basing the “day case” definition on a planned overnight stay (please see the adjacent FAQ for details). We are excluding all cardiac procedures performed by a cardiac surgeon, but thoracic surgery and non-cranium surgery are included.

After the clinical questionnaires have been completed, we will ask local reporters to complete a data collection spreadsheet on all surgical activity during the chosen week and outcome at 30 days, and request copies of casenote extracts on select cases.

Frequently
Asked Questions |
 |
- What time does the study period start and end?
- Please include all patients whose anaesthetic commences just after midnight, going into the 1st and those whose anaesthetic commences by 23:59 on the March, 7th (and all those inbetween).
- How do you define day cases?
- If the patients do not have a planned overnight stay, they are considered to be day cases. If the patient is admitted, with the operation having been delayed for a few days, then has the operation, and goes home immediately thereafter, we are considering that to be a day case. The inpatient stay needs to occur after surgery.
- Are patients receiving anaesthesia for electro-convulsive therapy or cardioversions included?
- If these are surgical inpatients with a planned overnight stay, and if they meet the rest of our inclusion/exclusion criteria, we are including them in the study.
- Are patients included if they only have a local or regional anaesthetic, or nerve block?
- If these are surgical inpatients with a planned overnight stay, and if they meet the rest of our inclusion/exclusion criteria, we are including them in the study.
- On the clinical questionnaire, question 13a, what measurement should we report creatinine in?
- mmol/L
- Should locum anaesthetists complete the clinical forms?
- Yes.
