Parenteral Nutrition Study: Frequently Asked Questions

Data Collection for study - January 2009 to December 2009
Publication date: June 2010
If a patient is admitted to hospital prior to January 1st 2008 but starts PN between January 1st 2008 and March 31st inclusive are they included in the study?
Yes, the important date for inclusion of a patient in the study is the PN start date for the hospital episode.
Are neonates included in the study?
Yes, this study is looking at patients of all ages who received PN as an inpatient between January 1st 2008 and March 31st 2008 inclusive.
The patient was in hospital for 3 months, do you need photocopies of the casenotes for the whole episode?
No, we only require the casenotes from admission to PN start date and the subsequent 2 weeks of PN (or until discharge if this is sooner).
I would like to read the protocol - could you send me a copy?
Yes. All hospital/units/centres will be asked to take part regardless as NCEPOD need data from all hospitals for this study. Please contact NCEPOD directly using the details in the Contact Us section.
