Alcohol Related Liver Disease Study
This study has been commisioned by Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership as part of the Clinical Outcome Review Programme, under the contract awarded in 2011

Aim
To identify the remediable factors in the quality of care provided to patients treated for alcohol-related liver disease and the degree to which its mortality is amenable to health care intervention.
We will be reviewing the care of patients who died in hospital with a diagnosis of alcohol-related liver disease. There will be no age restrictions for inclusion. The included ICD10 codes are:
- K70 Alcoholic liver disease
- K70.0 Alcoholic fatty liver
- K70.1 Alcoholic hepatitis
- K70.2 Alcoholic fibrosis and sclerosis of liver
- K70.3 Alcoholic cirrhosis of liver
- K70.4 Alcoholic hepatic failure
Alcoholic hepatic failure:
- NOS
- acute
- chronic
- subacute
- with or without hepatic coma
- K70.9 Alcoholic liver disease, unspecified
Sampling period: Patients will be selected from all included cases if the patient died during 1st January and the 30th June 2011.
Sample size: A sample size of 500 patients will be included. The number of cases for which case notes will be requested will be limited to three per hospital.

Case note extracts: Case notes will be requested for the final admission. For previous admissions, up to two years, selected extracts will be requested. However, if it is easier to send them all then they can be filtered on arrival at NCEPOD.
Organisational questionnaire: An organisational questionnaire is currently being finalised with the expert group. It will be sent out to Local Reporters and available to download from the website in mid June.
